The Great South West Walk in Victoria is a loop track that starts in Portland and heads towards the South Australian Boarder along the Glenelg River and returns along to coastline via Cape Bridge Water.
It is estimated that 2000 walkers walk this track each year with many others completing parts of the track. There are 14 Campsites along the track with most walkers taking 10 – 14 days to complete this walk.
The Friends of the Great South West Walk maintain, administer and promote the walking trial in collaboration with and under the Jurisdiction of Parks Victoria.
To keep the track clearly defined and cut, requires the use of a heavy-duty self-propelled mower as many areas are too tight, rough or steep to use a ride on mower. Many of the areas that are mown are extremely harsh on equipment but the fleet of Deutscher Mowers (4 HE660 and 3 XE560) is able to withstand this environment and give reliable service.
A team of 30 volunteers spend three days a week maintaining the track. There is also a team of guys from the Men’s Shed in Nelson that are responsible for 7 klms in that area. One of the volunteers is responsible for the maintenance of the mowers which is carried out on the weekly basis.
Deutscher Mowers are manufactured in Ballarat and are pleased to know the equipment they manufacture is allowing people to enjoy this wonderful landscape along the Australian coast.
